It is brittle but mostly firmly stuck to the raw wood plank wall. It does not dissolve in hot water like mastic. If I can't get it off, then what can I cover it with? The surface is very uneven. Try warming it up with a heat gun or a hair dryer. That may soften it enought to scrape it off easily.
