My son just got a Squire Fat Strat HSS, Montego Black Metallic. A bunch of plastic started peeling off the pickguard, so we just peeled it all the way off. Now there are dull sticky patches of what appears to be remaining adhesive on some of the pickguard surface. I had the same sort of trouble.
The pick guard is plastic and pretty hardy, so as long as you use something non-corrosive it should be fine. I just dampened it with a damp cloth then rubbed it off. If not, you can buy guitar cleaners from sites like www.dolphinmusic.co.uk
